What’s Next for Gen X Travelers? Seeking Adventure, Connection & Balance
At O.A.T., travel has always been about more—much more—than snapping selfies at well-known tourist destinations. We view our journeys as a form of continuing education, focusing on off-the-beaten-path experiences that bring local culture to life. This is why our comprehensive itineraries are designed for active Americans over 50.
Now that the average age of Gen X is within our demographic, we wanted to explore how the generation is approaching travel. So we partnered with an outside research firm to survey 1,000 travelers born between the mid-1960s and early 1980s to see how attitudes are shifting. We discovered that Gen X travelers are carving out a new path—one that’s purposeful, immersive, and deeply personal.
The rise of meaningful journeys
Our research reveals that Gen X is leading the charge toward travel that transforms, inspires, and reconnects. Over 90% of respondents said they’re willing to invest more for unique experiences they couldn’t arrange on their own. For this group, travel isn’t just an escape—it’s a way to rediscover identity, create lasting memories, and make every day count.
Trips that leave you changed, that help you reconnect with who you are beyond daily responsibilities, are at the top of the wish list. It’s not about luxury, but about quality: 77% said they “don’t need luxury but want things done well.” Executional excellence, authenticity, and substance matter more than five-star amenities.
Comfort, variety, and autonomy: The new essentials
Our responders were clear about what makes a trip appealing to them:
- Mid-length tours (7–10 days): Long enough to immerse, short enough to avoid fatigue.
- Moderate pacing: Two to three nights in each location is ideal versus rapid-fire itineraries with one-night stays.
- Balanced dining: Most prefer a mix of included meals and opportunities to explore local cuisine independently.
- Comfort-first accommodations: Boutique hotels with authentic, local flavor have meaningful appeal, provided they don’t compromise comfort or accessibility.
- Blocks of free time: Half-day pockets of autonomy are essential, outperforming fully guided or fully independent days.
Our responders told us they want a blend of cities, small towns, and hidden gems. They crave a mix of iconic and lesser-known attractions, and authentic cultural interactions—such as meals in homes, day-in-the-life experiences, and opportunities to “travel like a local.”
Adventure, but make it approachable
Our responders suggest that Gen X is adventurous, but not reckless. Outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling are popular, as long as they’re approachable and not overly strenuous. There’s a strong desire for variety—nature, wildlife, culture, and history all have their place.
Younger Gen Xers (45-54) are more open to stepping outside their comfort zone, seeking relaxation from work and family obligations, and showing higher interest in nature and wildlife itineraries. Older Gen Xers (55-65) prioritize comfort, cultural depth, and balanced structure, with a willingness to pay a bit more for quality and inspiration.
The value of connection
Travel is increasingly seen as a way to connect—with local people, with fellow travelers, and with oneself. Small group tours are gaining traction, especially those composed of people in the same age group. Nearly half of our respondents said they are very willing to consider international travel with a small group of peers.
