City of Light, City of Games: Edward’s Olympic Summer in Paris
By Edward Iglesias, GCCL Program Director
As a Program Director for Grand Circle Cruise Line’s The Seine: Paris to Normandy River Cruise, I've spent years sharing my love for Paris with visitors. But this summer, I'm experiencing the City of Light in a whole new way—as a volunteer for the 2024 Olympic Games.
When I saw posters around Paris last March calling for Olympic volunteers, I knew I had to apply. Having lived here for over half my life, Paris is my adopted home, and I wanted to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. My background as a Program Director and my language skills helped me secure a spot.
In the lead-up to the games, Paris underwent a fascinating transformation. An eerie silence fell over the Seine as protective barriers went up, limiting access to pedestrians and cyclists. While it made navigation tricky, it also created a uniquely peaceful atmosphere along the river. Throughout the city, transportation upgrades and general sprucing up have Paris shining brighter than ever for its moment in the global spotlight.
My volunteer duties are centered at the main fan zone near Notre Dame, which opened on Bastille Day. This vibrant area features a stage, giant screens, and plenty of food and drink stands for visitors to soak in the Olympic spirit. As a volunteer, I wear many hats—greeter, photographer, media liaison, and general helper for whatever needs arise. It's a joy to welcome people from all corners of the world and help them create lasting memories of Paris.
The energy in the city is electric. After the initial quiet, Paris is slowly returning to its normal rhythm, but with an added buzz of excitement. Visitors from across Europe, China, India, Israel, and the United States are flooding in—all thrilled to be part of this unique moment in history.
As a perk of volunteering, I received a ticket to watch the men's skateboarding competition at a special stadium in Place de la Concorde. I can't wait to experience the Games as a spectator and witness this modern sport play out against the backdrop of Paris's classic beauty.
From my vantage point as both a long-time resident and an Olympic volunteer, I'm seeing Paris in a whole new light. The Games have brought a fresh energy to the city, reminding me why I fell in love with it in the first place. As I help visitors navigate this magical time, I'm also rediscovering the joy and wonder of Paris myself. It truly is, now more than ever, the most beautiful city in the world.
