The O.A.T. Difference

Harriet Lewis: Traveler to Traveler
Hear what real travel means to Harriet—unique experiences, connecting with others, and learning about yourself.

For more than 40 years, O.A.T. has been crafting itineraries designed to maximize the opportunity for such adventures for active Americans typically over 50 who are young at heart and interested in experiencing a destination—not just seeing it. Curious life-long learners, they embrace opportunities to immerse themselves in local culture, go off the beaten path, and step out of their comfort zones to learn more about the world. Here’s what makes us the undisputed leaders in small group travel along the road less traveled.

Unsurpassed value

Travel at the lowest per diems with a wealth of included features—all accommodations, most meals, daily cultural activities, and even most gratuities. And we back it up with a Best Price Guarantee.

Small groups, big discoveries

You’ll journey off the beaten path to see more of the world and experience authentic glimpses of local culture by traveling in a small group of 8-16 travelers (with a group size averaging 14) or 20-25 (average 22) aboard our small ships. Instead of rushing around like “tourists,” we blend in with the locals to listen, learn, and experience the world like true travelers.

Small ships, greater access

The size of our ships allows us to slip into smaller ports that larger vessels cannot access, limiting your land transfers and bringing you closer to the most authentic discoveries. Explore remote harbors and off-the-beaten-path destinations easily in a group of no more than 20-25 (average 22) aboard our small ships:

  • 16-passenger Galápagos small ship
  • 24 passenger M/S Discovery
  • 50-passenger M/V Athena
  • 50-passenger M/V Arethusa
  • 50-passenger M/V Artemis
  • 89-passenger M/V Clio
  • 90-passenger M/V Skorpios III
  • 98-passenger M/V Corinthian
  • 210- passenger M/V Ventus Australis or Stella Australis
  • 400- to 1000-passenger Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage Ship

Journey off the beaten path

To see the world like the locals, you should travel like one. Our small group size allows us to take the roads—and waterways—less traveled. So while you’ll certainly do some walking, you also might bounce along the streets of Ho Chi Minh City in a rickshaw, cruise along the Okavango Delta by dugout canoe, or ride along the dunes of the Sahara Desert on the back of a camel—whatever it takes to reach the soul of a destination. We try to include local transportation whenever possible during your adventure, so expect the unexpected.

The services of a local Trip Experience Leader

As residents of the regions you’ll be exploring, our Trip Experience Leaders provide the firsthand insight that only a local can. On land and at sea, these congenial men and women will make the traditions, history, and culture of their homeland come alive for you. And because we explore in such small groups, you’ll be able to receive more “one-on-one” time with your friendly and informative Trip Experience Leader.

Authentic cultural connections

You’ll get to engage with local people throughout each adventure, especially during O.A.T.’s A Day in the Life experience. Typical experiences include village walks, shopping at local markets, visiting children at their school, and Home-Hosted meals with local families.

Intimate lodgings to enhance your O.A.T. adventure

Our accommodations are chosen to reflect the spirit of our surroundings, from smaller family-run hotels and historic paradores to comfy tented camps exclusive to our small group. Occasionally, larger hotels closer to city centers are used. Wherever you stay, you’re assured a restful night’s sleep for the next day of discoveries.
