Travelogue: Marrakesh, Morocco 1951

Posted on 12/5/2017 12:00:00 AM in What We're Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

In this episode of Travelogue we visit 1951 Marrakesh, Morocco with seasoned traveler Watson Kintner. The city’s center square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, was a hub for travelers and locals alike, to buy and sell goods, entertain, and even get haircuts. To this day, Jemaa el-Fnaa remains a significant part of the city, although it has felt outside pressure for modern commercial expansion. To prevent unwanted overbuilding, UNESCO recently proclaimed the square to be a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, because of its rich tradition of oral storytelling and performance. Preserving tradition in a modern world is no simple task, and while the square has no doubt changed since Kintner’s visit, it is reassuring to hear that the spirit is intact.

Produced by David Conover & Paul Villanova
