A note from our curator, independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
Serbia is a country that has been conquered, inhabited, decimated, and rebuilt. It’s no wonder many tend to focus on the grim side of Serbian history. This film, which I directed for Grand Circle Travel, focuses on a more celebratory aspect of Serbia: its music. More specifically, Starogradska (“Old Town music”), which was born and popularized in Belgrade. It is a folk music that underscores the jovial, passionate, and resilient spirit of its people, its lyrics often centered around love. In the bohemian quarter of Belgrade, people still gather in taverns—just as poets and artists did in the 19th and early 20th centuries—to listen to Starogradska, sing, drink, and be happy. It’s a wonderful thing to behold.
