My first exposure to Sicilian culture was through my Sicilian-American friends and their immigrant parents and relatives while living in Newark, New Jersey’s North Ward during the early 1950’s. As a first generation Chinese-American, I was the minority in the neighborhood but taken under their wing and nurtured with their food, family values, culture, guile, humor, and tenacity. For years I wanted to tour Sicily for an in-depth exploration of my friends’ roots but didn’t have the opportunity until O.A.T. offered Sicily’s Ancient Landscapes & Timeless Traditions. This trip takes you way beyond Sicilian stereotypes and tourist sites, and immerses you in its people, culture, ancient and contemporary lifestyles, and food—especially during the Home-Hosted meals. It was like being a kid with my friends again.
