ReelEarth: Two Stories of Spinalonga

Posted on 8/6/2019 2:27:00 PM in What We’re Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

Filmmaker Daniel Quintanilla's trip to the Greek island of Spinalonga started with an innocent desire to make a video about the island, a picturesque piece of land off the coast of Crete. Then he saw the 1973 film L’Ordre, written by French ethnologist Maurice Born, which explores the island’s history as an early 20th century leper colony. Born asks of the film’s viewers, “Why do we go searching for the lepers? To talk about whom?” Daniel’s inspiration blossomed. In ReelEarth: Two Stories of Spinalonga, Daniel brings Maurice back to the island, asking him the same questions. Together, they investigate the ways we view and discuss places steeped in trauma and a past some would rather forget. By talking with Maurice, Daniel draws that history forth, and implores us to ponder why humans are drawn to places some consider “cursed.” In addition to a provocative inquiry, this film is extremely multi-national: in Greece, with spoken English, French, and Spanish. A treat to listen and watch!
