ReelEarth: The Basket Weavers of Botswana

Posted on 12/4/2018 12:00:00 AM in What We're Watching

A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:

Meet Gabane Moses and her tightly-knit community of women basketweavers in Mabele, a small village in the Kasane region of Botswana, four miles outside Chobe National Park. South African filmmaker Ian Miller brings us into the small room and onto the floor where the women of the Vuche Vuche cooperative sit to discuss their big problems—revenue challenges, a need for furniture and filing cabinets, etc.—as well as their big goals of autonomy, independence, education, and a healthy community. Will they succeed? We follow Gabane and her fellow weavers into the field to harvest palm fronds, and look over their shoulders as they carefully cut and dye the leaves. Through the intimate lens of this ReelEarth Collection film, we see how basket weaving is more than a craft for these women. They are also weaving together their culture and their material support for their families and futures. Well-worth the watch!
