A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
When Sandra first heard of Comuna 13 in Medellín, Colombia as a girl, it was widely-known to be one of the most dangerous places on earth. Now, Sandra is making the long and difficult trip across Colombia to visit Medellín and meet the women who were at the heart of the city’s dramatic change. These women are known locally as berracas, which directly translates to, “women of incredible courage.” Today, Medellín, thanks largely to its berracas, has transformed into a vibrant and peaceful city, bringing in visitors from all around the world. At home in Bogotá, Sandra works tirelessly to empower women, reduce drug violence, and most especially, to combat divisions within her own community. However, at only 26 years old, she has much to learn from Medellín’s berracas. At first glance, this may look like an ordinary trip, but for Sandra and the women in her community, visiting Comuna 13 and collaborating with its berracas could be a life-changing experience, one that could affect their daughters for generations to come.
