A note from independent filmmaker David Conover on why he chose this film:
In this episode of Great Railway Journeys of Europe, host Julian Davidson travels from fjord to fjord in scenic Norway. He starts his journey in the capital city of Oslo, where he takes in the angular beauty of the granitic Oslo Opera House and delves into the history of the country’s railway system. Then he makes his way to Bergen, stopping in the villages of Finse, Myrdal, and Flåm. I love the distinct pace of train travel—the way villages give way to rolling countrysides, and wild forests and mountains unravel into vast oceanscapes. It’s an experience unlike any other. Also notable about Julian’s trip is his interview with a Viking expert. Did you know that Vikings were such fierce and successful warriors because their belief in Valhalla— the godly hall in Norse mythology where heroes slain in battle are received—made them unafraid of death?
