A note from our curator, independent filmmaker David Conover, on why he chose this video:
This is a story lovingly told. In Jamshedpur, India, we follow 14-year-old schoolboy Amar through the course of a day supporting his family, from the pre-dawn darkness at 4:00am when he wakes, to the 10pm darkness when he reads aloud in whispers while siblings sleep. Along the way, we feel the details: Amar rolling newspapers and then hurling them onto balconies at dawn before returning home to polish his shoes in time for school. This observational documentary tells a simple story, a young boy working two jobs—a newspaper route, and in a small electrical shop—on top of going to Kerala Samajam Hindi School in the afternoons. On the wall of his home, a poster reads, “All great achievements require time.”
