Our tour of Tuscany & Umbria was the second of back-to-back tours, following the excellent tour of Backroads of Iberia: Spanish Paradores and Portugese Pousadas. We welcomed the extra day before our tour started in Lucca and coincidently met our Trip Experience Leader at breakfast. She gave us some excellent tips for enjoying the city on our own that day. It was a wonderful, relaxing day we will never forget—climbing the tower, cycling around the city wall, enjoying some Cecina, and of course gelato. We then allowed the tour to absorb us into the magic of the Tuscan countryside: its culture, food, and wine. Highlights of the tour would be the Carrara marble quarry; sampling lardo; truffle hunting in Umbria and subsequently tasting them with homemade pasta in a one thousand year old barn; the cooking class and lunch in Castello Vicchiomaggio; and of course, wine tasting at Villa Sant’Anna in Montepulciano. What’s not to love about Tuscany?
