On the morning after our Turkey's Magical Hideaways adventure, fly from Izmir to Mardin, where we tour its hilltop Old City. Later, we enjoy dinner at our hotel in Urfa.
After breakfast today, we tour the village of Harran, where Abraham is said to have lived nearly 4,000 years ago. We then return to Urfa, where we’ll have time for lunch on our own before exploring its Arab Quarter and Old Town. The rest of your day is at leisure, and dinner is on your own this evening.
We drive to Mount Nemrut, stopping along the way to visit the controversial Ataturk Dam on the Euphrates. After lunch on our own, we explore Mount Nemrut—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—where the Armenian king Antiochus I ordered huge statues built in honor of himself and the gods. The massive stone heads on the hillside—all that remain of his once-magnificent tribute to Hercules, Zeus and others—have become one of the most recognized symbols of Eastern Turkey. Tonight, we dine together in Urfa.
After breakfast in the hotel, we drive to Gaziantep. After lunch on your own, we’ll visit the Mosaic Museum of Gaziantep, which houses relics from the ancient city of Zeugma. After a tour of the Old City and castle district, we arrive at our hotel and enjoy an included dinner.
After breakfast at our hotel, we embark upon a boat ride on the Euphrates River, including a cruise around the Roman fortress of Rumkale, where St. John the Apostle is said to have written his Gospel.
Following lunch on our own around Halfeti, we return to Gaziantep to enjoy time for independent exploration. Dinner is included at our hotel this evening.
Early this morning, we transfer to the airport for our return flight to the U.S. via Istanbul.
