  • After an overnight flight and layover in Hong Kong, arrive in Denpasar, Bali, this afternoon and transfer to our Ubud hotel. Tonight, we’ll convene for a Welcome Dinner at Cafe Wayan, the noted bakery and restaurant featured in Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir Eat, Pray, Love.

  • While the entire island of Bali is renowned for its fine arts, Ubud is its cultural heart—a center of batik painters, mask carvers, weavers, musicians, and more. Our full-day tour begins with visits to the workshops of a local shadow-puppet master and mask maker. After lunch on your own in town, we’ll gather to visit a coffee and cocoa plantation before returning to our hotel for an evening at leisure. For dinner, we’ll experience Balinese cuisine and hospitality in the home of a local family.

  • After breakfast, we set out for a morning hike in the forested grounds surrounding Ubud. Next, we visit a coffee and cocoa plantation to learn about local farming practices. Take advantage of a free afternoon to browse the craft shops and galleries of Ubud. Lunch and dinner are on your own today.

  • This morning, we visit Alas Kedaton, or Monkey Forest, a sanctuary where hundreds of Balinese monkeys gather in giant nutmeg trees and at a temple in the heart of the forest.

Then we begin our transfer to Jimbaran, a coastal enclave overlooking the Indian Ocean. En route, we visit Taman Ayun, a 17th-century Hindu water temple protected by UNESCO World Heritage. Translated as "beautiful garden," the ancient royal temple complex is located in a serene woodland setting and appears to float on the waters of a surrounding fishpond. After an included lunch, we stop to explore Medahan village and its local temple, Pura Dalem, before checking into our Jimbaran hotel in late afternoon. Enjoy some time at leisure at our beachfront hotel along Jimbaran Bay, and dinner is on your own.

  • This morning before breakfast, we’ll take an orientation walk around our hotel, exploring a local market along the way. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Jimbaran or enjoy the white-sand beach that fronts our hotel. In the early evening, we gather again and head to the clifftop temple of Uluwatu for stunning views.

  • After breakfast, we head to Denpasar to visit the Bali National Museum to view its collections, which range from the Neolithic period through to modern Balinese religion and culture, housed in four separate pavilions. Then we stop at the Bali Art Center, a complex dedicated to preserving Balinese culture. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll drive to a nearby village to learn about traditions of dance and performance on the island. Afterwards, we can celebrate our memories of Bali during a barbecue dinner at Jimbaran Bay.

    • Meals included:

After breakfast and the morning at leisure in Jimbaran, we transfer to the Denpasar airport and fly to Bangkok (via Kuala Lumpur) and join Day 2 of your Inside Vietnam adventure.
