Grand Circle Foundation
Alan and Harriet Lewis created the nonprofit Grand Circle Foundation with the mission of changing people’s lives through travel—which includes both the travelers who journey with OAT, and the local people who welcome us so warmly into their homelands.
Grand Circle Foundation is one of the few organizations sanctioned by the U.S. government to offer legal, fully-licensed travel to Cuba. By limiting our group size to just 12-20 participants on each of our two unique programs, we’re able to provide you with rich insights into Cuban life.
Exchange thoughts, experiences, and opinions openly with other travelers, whether you're looking for information on a future trip, or have valuable insights from your own travels you'd like to share.
Connect with like-minded OAT travelers and meet new people who not only share your love for travel, but who might also become your new friends as you explore the world together.
Learn more about our Facebook online community, a place where you can stay connected with OAT and your fellow travelers. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, get advice, find travel companions, learn what’s new at OAT, share your photos, videos, and stories, and more.
Our regional Traveler Celebration Events are opportunities for you to meet other world travelers who share your passion for learning and discovery, swap travel stories, and give us feedback on how we can to make your experience even better—plus, you’ll be one of the first to preview upcoming trips.
This year, we received thousands of Photo Contest entries, representing countries all around the world. Congratulations to all of our winners—and to everyone who entered our contest.
Grand Circle Gallery in Boston invites you to view our extensive collection of vintage travel posters and breathtaking black-and-white photography from Alan and Harriet Lewis’ private collection, as well as special exhibits on other travel-related themes.

By seeing how children are educated all over the world, we gain a rare understanding of different cultural values—as well as the common values that unite us all. That's why our Day in the Life experience features the opportunity to visit a local school supported by Grand Circle Foundation. You'll visit one of the schools featured below, providing school is in session.
"The principals, teachers, and students were outstanding. What they have done with that school with the assistance of Grand Circle Foundation is outstanding … The impact on their families and the community are endless. I was proud to be able to assist with this program."

As one of the primary schools that feeds into the Banjika Secondary, Bashay brings education to over 750 students in the village of Karatu. Besides building three water tanks and two classrooms, renovating four classrooms, and re-roofing two others, the determination of a group of travelers and help from the Foundation finished building the school’s kitchen so that all children could have a free school lunch and not have to walk home to eat—a journey of up to ten miles roundtrip for some.
Partner since: 2004 • Total donated: $171,975
When we first began our partnership with the village of Karatu, Tanzania, there were only a few primary schools to support, including Bashay and Njia Panda. Upon graduating from one of these schools, the students had nowhere to go to further their education. To address this need, Banjika Secondary School was built in 2004—thanks largely to the contributions of an OAT traveler named Susan Rickert.
Along with Susan’s fundraising efforts, Grand Circle Foundation and other generous donors have contributed funds that have built nine classrooms, science labs, and improved the plumbing and water systems. In addition, an 8-time traveler named Hugh Thurnauer established a scholarship fund to help eight students continue their education.
Partner since: 2004 • Total donated: $44,646
We’ve supported the village of Karatu, Tanzania for over six years, and we’re looking forward to having a lasting impact in the lives of students who attend Nija Panda Primary School. Along with building two new classrooms and renovating rooms including the kindergarten, we have built toilets and provided computers, 750 textbooks, desks, and supplies for students and faculty.
Partner since: 2011 • Total donated: $1,000
In 2011, Tarangire Primary School became Grand Circle Foundation’s newest partner in Tanzania. Situated on the outskirts of the Tarangire National Park, the school serves 600 children from neighboring bomas, up from just 100 when it first opened in 1973. It came to the attention of the Foundation that Tarangire Primary School is woefully under-funded—the government provides just $3 per student annually, which doesn’t come close to covering the basic costs of uniforms and workbooks.
Currently we are working with the headmaster, Stanley, to determine how a grant from the Foundation can have the greatest impact. From insufficient teacher housing to much needed desks, textbooks, and office space, Grand Circle Foundation is excited to contribute towards a better future for the students and faculty of Tarangire Primary School.
Year-round, with breaks from June 1 through July 15, September 15 through September 30, and December 1 through December 30
Alan and Harriet Lewis founded Grand Circle Foundation in 1992 as a means of giving back to the world we travel. Because they donate an annually determined amount of revenue from our trips, we consider each one of our travelers as a partner in the Foundation’s work around the world. To date, the Foundation has pledged or donated more than $97 million in support of 300 different organizations—including 60 villages and nearly 100 schools that lie in the paths of our journeys.
