Grand Circle Foundation
Alan and Harriet Lewis created the nonprofit Grand Circle Foundation with the mission of changing people’s lives through travel—which includes both the travelers who journey with OAT, and the local people who welcome us so warmly into their homelands.
Grand Circle Foundation is one of the few organizations sanctioned by the U.S. government to offer legal, fully-licensed travel to Cuba. By limiting our group size to just 12-20 participants on each of our two unique programs, we’re able to provide you with rich insights into Cuban life.
Exchange thoughts, experiences, and opinions openly with other travelers, whether you're looking for information on a future trip, or have valuable insights from your own travels you'd like to share.
Connect with like-minded OAT travelers and meet new people who not only share your love for travel, but who might also become your new friends as you explore the world together.
Learn more about our Facebook online community, a place where you can stay connected with OAT and your fellow travelers. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, get advice, find travel companions, learn what’s new at OAT, share your photos, videos, and stories, and more.
Our regional Traveler Celebration Events are opportunities for you to meet other world travelers who share your passion for learning and discovery, swap travel stories, and give us feedback on how we can to make your experience even better—plus, you’ll be one of the first to preview upcoming trips.
This year, we received thousands of Photo Contest entries, representing countries all around the world. Congratulations to all of our winners—and to everyone who entered our contest.
Grand Circle Gallery in Boston invites you to view our extensive collection of vintage travel posters and breathtaking black-and-white photography from Alan and Harriet Lewis’ private collection, as well as special exhibits on other travel-related themes.

Spend four days in Budapest, the charming Hungarian capital along both shores of the Danube—where history and modernity are seamlessly woven as one. Gaze at the city’s skyline from Fisherman’s Bastion, delight in the medieval monuments of Castle Hill, and enjoy your stay in one of the world’s most beautiful capitals.
Single Supplement: FREE.Please note: This extension may not be available on all departures. Ask our Adventure Specialists for details.
This morning, depart Ljubljana by train for Budapest. Lunch is on your own. When you arrive in Budapest in the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and enjoy a brief orientation walk and Welcome Drink.
Dinner is on your own.
After breakfast, set out on an included walking tour of Budapest. Known as the “Queen of the Danube,” Budapest is divided by the beautiful river, with Pest to its east, and Buda to its west. During your stay, you may wish to visit the medieval buildings at Buda’s Castle Hill, where a massive castle complex and its ramparts high above the Danube have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk across the Danube bridges, including the famous Chain Bridge, first opened in 1849 to link the two provincial towns of Buda and Pest, and a symbol of Hungarian liberty in more recent times. See the imposing riverfront Parliament Building and visit Heroes’ Square, a memorial to the great leaders in Hungary’s history dominated by the great Millennium Monument.
Another Budapest highlight is the Matthias Church, formally named the Church of Our Lady and used for the coronations of Hungarian kings. Dating to the 13th century, the structure is a fascinating blend of architectural styles utilized during reconstruction at different times in its history.
At the conclusion of your walking tour, the rest of the day is free for you to explore this grand city on your own. Lunch is on your own.
This evening, we'll gather together to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Take advantage of a free day to plan your own activities in this very walkable city. Be sure to stroll along the Vaci utca, a wonderful pedestrian-only street filled with cafés, shops, boutiques, and stunning architecture. You may also wish to head to the Hungarian National Gallery for its exhibits of Hungarian art from medieval times to the modern day.
Lunch and dinner are on your own today.
With another day of independent exploring in Budapest, this might be the time to consider an excursion to Margaret Island using the local boat service that runs from both sides of the Danube. Private motorized traffic is not allowed on the island, so buses, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and walking are the means of getting around. A giant water tower building dominates the landscape, and there are ruins of a Dominican convent and a 13th-century Franciscan church. The largest park in Budapest, forested with chestnut and willow trees, is located on the island, as well as several botanical gardens including a Japanese Garden and a Rose Garden.
This evening, try one of the city’s many fine restaurants for dinner on your own.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight to the U.S.
Please fill out the form below to request a call from an Adventure Specialist who will help you make your reservation at a time that’s convenient for you. We will make every effort to return your call during the time frame you select.
