It’s easy to add thundering Iguassu Falls—twice as wide as and 65 feet higher than Niagara Falls—to your explorations of South America’s natural wonders. On this extension, we’ll visit both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides of this astonishing array of 275 separate cascades and waterfalls. We’ll also spend a day discovering Buenos Aires, with an included boat ride on the Parana River Delta.

Day 1
Fly to Iguassu Falls/Discover Brazilian side of Falls

After breakfast, we fly to Iguassu Falls. Please plan to pack a small bag for our two-night stay at Iguassu Falls and store the rest of your luggage at your Buenos Aires hotel, where you can retrieve it before your return to the U.S.

Located on the Argentina/Brazil border, the falls at Iguassu are among the world’s most impressive sights—twice as high as Niagara Falls and 65 feet wider. After checking in to our Argentine hotel, we’ll cross the border to survey the Falls from the Brazilian side. A stone path leads to several platforms with fine views from different angles. You can get close enough to the thundering torrents to feel the spray, and you may glimpse the park’s resident coatis (raccoon-like animals).

Dinner tonight is at your hotel.
Day 2
Discover Argentinean Side of Falls/Optional Great Adventure tour

After breakfast today, we spend the bulk of the morning on a guided walk along the Argentinean side. Here the falls can be approached, viewed, felt, and experienced from a number of angles. We’ll also enjoy a dramatic walk along the Garganta del Diablo (“Devil’s Throat”), where the water plunges 230 feet into a roiling cauldron. With the spray flying up to 50 feet above your head and rainbows dancing in it, the view here can only be described as breathtaking!

After a buffet lunch at a restaurant, you’ll have the remainder of the afternoon to spend at leisure before returning to our hotel in Argentina. Or, perhaps you’ll join us on an optional Great Adventure tour that brings together both halves of Iguassu National Park: the jungle and the waterfalls. We begin by entering the jungle on the Sendero Yacaratía trail, which offers sweeping panoramic views. After a short ride, we arrive at the Puerto Macuco base and the floating dock where we board our motorboat for the second half of our tour. We travel by motorboat through the Iguassu River Canyon, passing through a few river rapids, before reaching the calm side of San Martin Island. From here we sail on for up-close views of two of the park’s waterfalls—first to Tres Mosqueteros for a view of both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides of Iguassu, and then to the largest and most impressive waterfall, the San Martin.

Day 3
Fly to Buenos Aires

After breakfast, you have the morning free in Iguassu Falls. Lunch is on your own, and we transfer to the airport at midday for our afternoon flight to Buenos Aires, where dinner is on your own this evening.
Day 4
Explore Parana Delta/Day at Leisure/Fly Overnight to U.S.

After breakfast, your morning is free for relaxing or exploring independently in Buenos Aires. Lunch is on your own. In the afternoon, we head for the area where the Parana River empties into the Rio de la Plata on its way into the Atlantic, forming a huge delta. This exotic landscape is just half an hour from the city but seems a million miles away. Traditional houses on stilts (pilotes) are surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation and built on islands that are separated by a twisting maze of waterways. Enjoy a relaxing boat ride in this scenic area, which is one of Latin America’s most unique environments.

We return to Buenos Aires, where dinner is on your own. Early this evening, transfer to the airport to board your overnight flight home.
