Customize your trip

With our True Choice Program, you can choose to stay longer before or after your trip on your own, or combine two adventures to maximize your value. Here are more ways to create the OAT adventure that’s right for you:

  • Choose our standard air routing, or work with us to select the airline and routing you prefer
  • Make your own international flight arrangements directly with the airline, applying frequent flyer miles if available
  • Stay overnight in a connecting city before or after your trip
  • Request to arrive a few days early to get a fresh start on your adventure
  • Choose to “break away” before or after your trip, spending additional days or weeks on your own
  • Extend your adventure with our optional pre- and post-trip extensions
  • Combine your choice of OAT adventures to maximize your value
  • Upgrade to business or premium economy class

The air options listed above will involve an additional fee of $100 per person for confirmed requests (as well as incremental airfare costs based on your specific choice). This service fee will be waived for Inner Circle/Sir Edmund Hillary Club members.

Or, when you make your reservation, you can choose our standard air routing, for which approximate travel times are shown below.

Ger Camps—Traditional lodgings in the Mongolian countryside
Mongolia

In four locations on this itinerary, we will stay in lodgings that closely reflect the homes of Mongolian nomadic herders. Staying in traditional gers will add an element of authenticity to your discovery of Mongolia—as well as providing you with a richer understanding of the harmony of ger living with nature and nomadic ways of life.

Ger camps feature a group of free-standing gers, the traditional, round-domed structures covered in felt or durable white canvas that have been used for centuries throughout Mongolia. While rustic, gers are quite comfortable and allow our small groups to explore Mongolia’s pristine countryside and areas that lack modern traveler accommodations.

Individual gers are equipped with two wood-framed beds (including warm bedding), simple furniture, and a wood stove that is kept stoked by a member of the camp staff. Since ger camps are also sensitive to their natural surroundings, they depend on solar and/or wind energy to generate electricity, which is typically only available in the evenings from about 8:30pm to 11pm. Air-conditioning is not available in the camps (nor will you find it in most Western-style hotels in Mongolia). Meals at our ger camps are served in a central tent or lodge. Shared Western-style toilet and shower facilities (with limited hot water) are also located in a central camp building.

Landscape Hotel
Dali, China (pre-trip extension)

Terema Lodge
Listvyanka, Siberia (post-trip extension)

The Terema Lodge was constructed from local pine logs, and features a restaurant that serves Russian and Siberian specialties that can be enjoyed on the hotel’s veranda overlooking Lake Baikal. There is also a bar and sauna on-site. Local art galleries, a museum, and an aquarium are about a 30-minute walk from the hotel grounds. There are 18 rooms at the lodge, each featuring a television, private bath, and views of the surrounding landscape.
