Optional Tour

Baroque City of Varazdin ($100 per person);

Day 1
Zagreb/City tour

This morning after breakfast, your Hospitality Desk Representative will give you a brief orientation tour of the area around your hotel, followed by a Zagreb city tour. You have the expert assistance of OAT’s Hospitality Desk available throughout your extension to help you plan independent touring, dining, and other activities. Like many medieval cities, Zagreb includes an Upper and Lower Town. Your included city tour starts in the Lower Town (Donji Grad), where you’ll see many of the city’s civic and historic monuments. Once you reach Upper Town, the tour will focus on Zagreb’s medieval landmarks, such as its stone gates and St. Mark’s Church. Your walk ends at the Square of Ban Jelacic (Trg Bana Jelacic), the city’s hub.

The square where your tour ends offers many cafes to choose from for lunch on your own. Your afternoon is then free to continue independent exploration from this central location.

Dinner is on your own this evening.

Day 2
Zagreb/Optional Baroque City of Varazdin tour

Today, explore Zagreb and its environs on your own. You might enjoy lunch on your own at any of several cafes in the square.

Or, join us for an optional excursion to the lovely Baroque city of Varazdin. For centuries, this was the home of several aristocratic families, who built magnificent palaces and churches that continue to grace the city today. Varazdin’s centerpiece is its castle, surrounded by a moat and entered via drawbridge, which is now a museum featuring antique furniture from different eras. Begun in the twelfth century, the castle was still used as a seat of local government until 1925, and is set in a park with striking landscaping. The cost of this optional tour includes lunch.

You are free to enjoy dinner on your own this evening.

Day 3
Zagreb

Today is yours to enjoy at leisure in Zagreb, perhaps to visit the Croatian Museum of Natural Sciences, which has a unique exhibit displaying the most extensive remains of a Neanderthal Man ever found on one site. Or delve into regional history at the Croatian Historical Museum and the Museum of Arts and Crafts.

Day 4
Zagreb/At leisure

Another free day in Zagreb presents myriad opportunities for individual exploration. Something different might be a stroll through Mirogoj cemetery. This unusually attractive locale is home to many historic figures throughout Croatian history. Individual graves marked with a hammer and sickle, crescents, crosses, and Jewish stars speak to the cosmopolitan nature of what is considered one of the most beautiful cemetery parks in all of Europe.

Day 5
Return to U.S.

After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your flight back home.
