Pre-Trip: Before The Incas: Peru's Pyramids & The Lord of Sipan

4 nights from only $1195

Expand your discoveries of Peru’s ancient heritage in the pre-Incan kingdoms of Chimú and Moche in northern Peru. Among the Moche treasures we’ll see are those found in the tomb of warrior-king Lord Sipan, comparable in their glory to the trove of King Tut. Our discoveries are based in two culturally rich cities, Trujillo and Chiclayo, for an experience that perfectly complements our adventure in the Amazon.

Single Supplement: FREE.

Day 1
Depart U.S.

Today you depart on a flight from the U.S. to Lima, Peru.

Day 2
Arrive in Lima/Fly to Trujillo

This morning you’ll arrive in Lima, where your Trip Leader will meet you. You’ll transfer to a hotel in Lima, where you’ll have the use of a day room for the morning. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll depart for our flight to Trujillo, the capital of Peru’s La Libertad Region. We arrive in late afternoon and check into our hotel in Trujillo, where we’ll enjoy dinner together this evening.

Day 3
Trujillo/Huaca de la Luna/Huanchaco/Chan Chan

Today we tour Huaca de la Luna (Pyramid of the Moon), where we’ll delve into the history of the Moche, a pre-Incan Peruvian warrior society. We’ll also visit Huanchaco Beach to see surfers and caballitos (fishing boats made of reeds) before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant. Then we discover Chan Chan, ancient capital of the Chimú Empire that followed the Moche. This 500-acre UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest adobe complex in the world. After our tour, we’ll see Peru’s Los Caballos de Paso Fino (the horses with the fine walk) at an exciting demonstration. We return to our hotel in the evening and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4
Trujillo/El Brujo/Guadalupe/Chiclayo

After breakfast, we depart overland for Chiclayo. We stop along the way at El Brujo (The Wizard), a massive Moche pyramid complex. Here we’ll see the tomb of La Dama de Cao, the mummy of a tattooed woman thought to be a Moche priestess, whose discovery in 2006 is regarded as one of the world’s great archaeological finds. We explore a market in the village of Guadalupe, then arrive in Chiclayo in the early afternoon and enjoy a late lunch at our hotel. Afterwards, your afternoon and evening are at leisure and dinner is on your own.

Day 5
Túcume/Sipán Museum/Market of Wizards

After breakfast, we travel to Túcume, the capital of the pre-Incan Lambayeque Kingdom. Here 26 large adobe pyramids designed for a variety of ritual and other functions still stand—dramatic evidence of a sophisticated society that inhabited Peru long before the Incas. We enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then tour a museum featuring the treasures of Lord Sipán, a high-ranking Moche leader whose tomb has been compared to King Tut’s. Afterwards, we tour the Market of Wizards, where we’ll learn about the culture of Peru’s curanderos (healers). Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6
Chiclayo/Lima

Today, you'll fly from Chiclayo to Lima to begin our Amazon River Cruise & Rain Forest adventure.
