Some people worry about the prospect of traveling by themselves. But for me, I like exploring the world on my own. It not only allows me to learn about new cultures and meet the local people in the countries I visit, but it also forces me to get acquainted with the other people in my group—and I meet some wonderful new friends that way.
In 2004, I took a trip with OAT’s sister company, Grand Circle, to Russia. And because of my enjoyable experiences on this trip, I knew I wanted to travel with OAT and Grand Circle by ship again.
I considered traveling to New Zealand, but decided on OAT’s Treasures of the Aegean: Greek Island Cruise, Athens & Istanbul Small Ship Adventure instead because I felt that New Zealand wouldn’t allow me to experience a way of life much different than what I was used to at home. And I could not have been more delighted with my journey to Greece and Turkey.

The fellow travelers in my group were wonderful. I was with a group of 14 friends that were traveling together, so I was a little nervous that I’d have a hard time becoming part of their group. But there was no need to worry because my group members were so friendly and open. That’s another thing I love about traveling: Your fellow travelers are always different from you, so it’s incredibly interesting to learn about their lives, as well as the places you’re visiting.
Although I enjoyed everything about my Treasures of the Aegean adventure—from the ship’s cabins to the friendly staff to my amazing Trip Leader—the time I spent in Turkey was truly eye-opening. I was pleasantly surprised by the Turkish people I encountered throughout my trip. They were just people like you and me. It was fun exploring the local markets, and especially, our visit to the spice market. There were young children running around and playing. I realized that they’re kids just like any other you might encounter in the U.S. No matter where you are in the world, people are just people.
Janell enjoyed touring the local spice bazaars in Istanbul, like the one pictured here.
And although I don’t mind traveling by myself, our Trip Leader Katia made us all feel extra safe and cared for during our adventure. One evening, Katia planned to take the group out to eat. I was tired from our day of exploring, so I told her that I was going to stay back. She offered to stay with me, but I assured her that I’d be just fine and I felt completely safe staying on the ship on my own. But it just goes to show you that she was willing to go that extra mile to be sure I felt protected and completely at ease—and something I greatly appreciate as a woman traveling on my own.

Travel opens the doors to new places, people, and ways of life. And your encounters with the locals can be even more rewarding when you attempt to become part of their culture. For example, learning how to say, “good morning” or “thanks” can really go a long way. The locals appreciate your effort—even if you’re pronunciation leaves something to be desired—as mine sometimes is. And remember, a smile can go a long way no matter where you travel.
