Our travelers' photos from the field in Egypt and Jordan
Do blondes have more fun in Egypt?
As a sometimes-blonde, I know that light hair can be fascinating to children in some parts of the world. Ruth Anne Lawson, a 3-time OAT traveler, discovered this firsthand when she and her husband, Rick, came upon these schoolchildren in Cairo during Cairo & the Eternal Nile River. Rick tells us that the boys took turns taking pictures of Ruth Ann with their cell phones. “They were so friendly and inquisitive and we had a wonderful time talking to them,” says the couple.
Meet the “Henna Ladies”
The beautifully intricate designs of traditional henna tattoos are hard to resist when you’re in Egypt—and because they’re temporary, there’s no reason not to give them a try. After getting their hands tattooed in a Nubian village during Cairo & the Eternal Nile River, this trio was dubbed the “Henna Ladies” by the rest of the group: From left to right, 2-time traveler Caroline Murgoia, 6-time traveler Inge Curlee, first-time traveler Mary Campbell, and 5-time traveler Susie Huey.
Your chariot awaits
At the Hippodrome in Jerash, Jordan, reenactments still bring Roman gladiatorial contests to life—though without the deadly consequences of ancient times. Laura Tudor, a three-time traveler, had nothing to fear when she took the reins of a Roman chariot during the post-trip extension of her Cairo & the Eternal Nile River adventure. “Open-wheel racing at its best,” she tells us.
