Central America is a land alive with history and culture. From tracing the footsteps of the ancient Mayan civilization to discovering the incredibly lush landscapes of Costa Rica to encountering some of the friendliest and warmest people you’ll ever meet, Central America offers something special around each turn.
That’s why it’s no surprise that so many OAT travelers can’t help but share their wonderful memories and photos from their journeys to this area of the world with me. Here, JoAnne & Glenn T. and Linda G. describe why they loved OAT’s Real Affordable Costa Rica adventure so much …
We celebrated our 45th anniversary while in Costa Rica and were so touched by the surprise anniversary cake given to us. Everyone on our tour enjoyed the treat. Thank you, and thanks to our wonderful Trip Leader, Eduardo Caravaca.

I was amazed by the beautiful foliage in Costa Rica—a potpourri of greens and tropical flowers, and many huge plants that pale in comparison to the mere houseplants I have at home. Our Trip Leader was wonderful, energetic, funny, very knowledgeable, and understanding.
I was very excited to go zip-lining, but once I had my gear on and hiked up to the first platform, I looked down into the vast wilderness below and got cold feet—quickly having second thoughts about zipping down. But, while I was hesitating, someone quickly hooked me up and away I went …and it was so much fun! I didn’t have time to reconsider, and I wanted to do it again as soon as it was over. Overcoming this personal challenge for me was rewarding and afforded me confidence that I could conquer my fears.
The little side trips were really special, especially viewing the waterfalls, which were spectacular. Some plant leaves we saw were bigger than an umbrella! The cooking lessons were fun, and we had the chance to help prepare our own tortillas, which was comical to watch as my husband tried to perfect this project. The wildlife was spectacular, and it wasn’t just a picture from a book, it was right within our view. Horseback riding allowed us to see some of the country along its beautiful trails.
And the visits to local homes and a school assured us that charades, smiles, and love are invaluable and comforting experiences when one does not speak the same language. I had to reassure myself that I was actually present and visiting one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The nature hikes, white-water rafting, and delicious foods were exceptional—plus Mother Nature blessed us with good, comfortable weather.
