At OAT, we change lives every day through travel—but this group had the opportunity to save them
One day during a Turkey’s Magical Hideaways adventure, I decided to take a new road that was going through a very mountainous area. I knew that on this road we had little chance to find a place for lunch and I told this to the group. They said they didn’t mind not eating lunch that day. When we drove through a little village, we saw that all the people of the village had gathered in the garden of a house. We stopped to have a closer look and were immediately invited to join. It was a wedding, and after five minutes the group was sitting around a big table and was served a very tasty lunch.
After spending some time with the people and learning about their customs, we had to leave. The road took us through a forest and at one point we saw that there was a little fire in the woods. We stopped to check it and realized that this was the beginning of a real forest fire.
I immediately called the fire department, but knowing that such a fire can easily get out of control I decided to do something. Luckily there was a little stream running close to the fire and we had some buckets in the bus, so we made a water chain and started to fight the fire. By the time the firemen arrived we had the fire under control.
Everybody was very excited and happy and we knew that we had deserved our free lunch by saving the forest—and, most likely, the village and its people who had invited us to lunch.
It was a risk to take a new road but we were rewarded by an unforgettable day.
