Zipping out of 2009 and trying something new
Over the holidays, my daughter, Charlotte, decided she wanted to go zip-lining—something she had never done before and was dying to try. (I suspect she might have been inspired by the glowing reviews from OAT travelers who went zip-lining through the rain forest canopy on our Real Affordable Costa Rica adventure!). So during our family vacation in Barbados, she planned a zip-lining excursion for all of us—herself, Alan, Edward, and me—on New Year’s Eve.
We drove to a lush area of the island, geared up with all of the necessary equipment (helmets, gloves, etc.), and prepared to scale our way to the first platform. You should also know—I’m terrified of heights, so this whole zip-lining thing was a big step for me.
As I reached the top of the 100-foot platform and allowed my eyes to scan back down to the ground, I quickly regretted my decision to be roped into this crazy new adventure. But it was a new year and time to challenge myself and try new things.
Charlotte promised she would go first, but somehow I managed to fall first in line! So I took a deep breath and propelled myself off the ledge. What a rush! Our guides at each platform were incredibly friendly and helpful—especially towards a woman trying to overcome her fear of heights. (You can enjoy some of the photos we captured during our journey through the trees in News & Views.)
So I managed to try something new—something I was afraid of—and it turned out to be incredibly fun. I hope that you, too, will try new things in 2010. And I hope that you will share these adventures with me at: harriet@oattravel.com
