Special places, special people
In 1996, I led a group of award-winning OAT associates on a special journey in China. It was a life-changing experience for all of us—so much so that I’ve asked my fellow travelers to share their memories in a story for News & Views. I was amused to learn that a few of my good friends and colleagues shared some memories of me—and I stand by my decision to wear pearls with my khakis and sneakers at the Great Wall. I wanted to do something special. (As for almost causing a riot in Tiananmen Square, however, I’ll leave that story to my friend Martha.)
What I remember most about the Great Wall, though, is an older woman I met there. She was walking with her daughter (who, amazingly, was negotiating the wall in high heels). I was opening a piece of candy, and she looked at me and smiled. It was such a nice smile. I shared my candy with her, and we walked the wall together, talking without words, connecting without words. We were just happy to be together and there was no need to say a single thing.
The people who share my journeys with me help to make each trip more special—whether we’re traveling together or making an unexpected connection. Have you ever traveled with a special group of people, or made a connection with a local you’ll never forget? Email me at:

Specifically, I’ll be focusing on Tunisia and Morocco in my next update of Harriet’s Corner—but I want to hear about all of your travels.
