Sign from the Times: Sri Lanka tops list of must-see destinations
Last week, The New York Times published an article about “The 31 Places to Go in 2010”—and named Sri Lanka as the #1 destination. For many, it seemed a surprising pick … but after visiting the island nation recently with my husband, Alan, I wholeheartedly agree that Sri Lanka deserves a place on every traveler’s must-see list.
As we have dear friends who live there, Alan and I had been trying to arrange a visit to Sri Lanka for some time—but it wasn’t until last March that we were able to make the journey. And despite the fact that, at the time of our visit, the country was still in the midst of a 25-year-long civil war, we encountered a nation of incredible physical beauty—and warm, welcoming people working hard to reconcile the peaceful teachings of their Buddhist faith with their all too justifiable desire for political, and personal, freedom.
Have you ever thought about exploring Sri Lanka? If not, what countries appear on your list of must-see destinations for 2010? Tell me about them at

We’ll be spotlighting the Middle East and Panama in future updates, so if you’ve explored these destinations with OAT, I’d love to hear your stories—and see your pictures!
