Peru: In the footsteps of the Inca … and my daughter
I’ve never been to Peru, but I hope to go within the next year if I can get my girlfriends together. It’s been on my list for a while—and my daughter Charlotte pushed it further toward the top when she traveled there with her best friend.
After being blessed by a shaman to help ensure a safe journey, Charlotte hiked for seven nights on Machu Picchu’s Inca Trail. She told me about the varied landscapes—eroded glaciers, open fields for cattle grazing, dense rain forest terrain full of orchids, and areas so high in the clouds that she could barely see her friend through the mist. She marveled at stonework inlaid by the ancient Inca—beautiful, perfectly aligned masonry. Charlotte knows how much I adore hiking with friends, enjoying scenery and conversation along the way. I hope to experience this in Peru soon … and I have a feeling Charlotte would return with me.
Has a loved one ever inspired you to explore a new destination? And—more importantly—were you glad that they did? Email your story to

In upcoming updates to Harriet’s Corner, I’ll be exploring China, Japan, and the South Pacific … but all stories, as always, are welcome.
