Our Story: The Lewis Family & OAT
If there’s one thing OAT travelers have in common, it’s their inquisitive nature—after all, their desire to explore other countries and experience local culture firsthand is why they venture off to distant lands. But that’s not all they’re curious about: many travelers have also wanted to know more about the history of OAT and how Alan and I got involved in the travel business.
So, several weeks ago, we decided to send a letter to OAT travelers offering insight on these topics—and many more. We felt it was important to be as candid as possible, so we acknowledged our missteps as well as our successes. And while we knew that our travelers would appreciate hearing “our story,” we’ve been truly amazed by how well this letter has been received.
For example, six-time traveler Ron M., of Plano, Texas, emailed us to say how much he enjoyed reading it: “The letter definitely put a personal face on your company and underscored your passion for travel. OAT has opened many new worlds and cultures to me and my wife and we look forward to being a part of many future trips …Keep up the great work!”
Alice & John B., eight-time travelers from Spring Hill, Florida, agreed, telling us, “We read about the history and development of OAT with great interest. You certainly have done a magnificent job.” And Linda & Joel N., four-time travelers from Larchmont, New York, felt the letter “was really well done. Just about every flaw we have noted with OAT was exposed in the letter and dealt with in a positive way. You understand consumer relations a lot better than most. We gave copies [of the letter] to our (grown) kids and some friends with whom we’d like to travel.”
We were especially touched by what Karin B.—a 17-time traveler from El Paso, Texas—had to say. “Your letter was so interesting and informative,” she wrote. “Because of your vision we have experienced so much joy making discoveries around the world, always learning something new and exciting. It’s keeping us young at heart! When possible, we included our family, and that has made our bonds even stronger. Traveling with OAT has been truly wonderful.”
On behalf of the Lewis family, I want to thank everyone who wrote to us offering their kind words and encouragement. (If you haven’t already read “our story,” you can do so here.) We’re so proud of what OAT has accomplished over the past 20 years—and our success as a company simply wouldn’t be possible without your continued support. Thank you for helping us be the best travel company we can be.
