In Greece, losing your luggage can be fun
I wouldn’t wish lost luggage on anyone—especially not anyone who’s traveling with OAT! But when my family and I arrived in Greece without our luggage several years ago, it ended up being a lot of fun.
We were in a small village, on the island of Mykonos, and we found a few stalls where people were selling things. We picked out clothing—there was such wonderful, casual, light cotton clothes, much more appropriate for the climate than we had brought. But that was just the beginning. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, combs … so many everyday things that we’d normally never need to buy in our travels. We had great interactions with locals as we tried to bargain—though all we really needed were the essentials, so we couldn’t walk away even if we wanted to. In all our negotiations, the merchants had the edge.
So in the end, shopping alongside the locals was a wonderful introduction to being in Greece. Have you had a similar “happy accident” while traveling? Tell me about it at

I’ll be featuring the Middle East and Turkey next in Harriet’s Corner, but I welcome all of your stories.
