For some OAT travelers, all the world’s a page
St. Augustine famously said, “The world is a book—and those who do not travel read only a page.” I couldn’t agree more: Long before I ever set foot on an airplane, I was traveling via armchair, learning about life in distant lands by reading about them in books.
Knowing that OAT travelers share my appreciation for exploring via the printed page, I recently asked you to tell me about some of your favorite books (and movies) featuring faraway places. Judging by your response, I couldn’t have picked a better topic; I’ve received scores of emails extolling the travel-related virtues of various films, novels, and non-fiction works. (My team and I are busy putting together a comprehensive list of your recommendations, which I’m looking forward to sharing with you at a later date.)
But that’s not all I discovered: While reading through these emails, I found that OAT travelers aren’t just avid readers—many are writers, too … and some of their literary endeavors have been inspired by the people and places they’ve encountered on their OAT adventures. In Traveler Stories, you’ll learn about four such authors, whose journeys to Africa, Patagonia, and other fascinating countries have resulted in the publication of three very different—but equally eye-opening—books. I hope you’ll enjoy learning more about these talented individuals and how they went about making their literary dreams a reality.
Have you been similarly inspired to put pen to paper after exploring the world with OAT? If so, I’d love to hear all about it. Please email me at
