Costa Rica’s greatest riches
As a former educator, I have enormous respect for the country of Costa Rica. They have an extremely high literacy rate—nearly 95%, which is one of the highest in Latin America. Education is free and required by law … but that doesn’t mean the schools don’t need help. Grand Circle Foundation supports five elementary schools within Costa Rica, and the eagerness and energy of the students is an absolute joy to experience.
I’ll never forget the story of one traveler, Andie Silhanek, who visited the San Josecito de Cutris School during her adventure. The principal happened to mention that she’d recently lost an English teacher—and Andie said, “If you find me a place to stay, I’ll come back and teach English for you.” True to her word, Andie spent a year living in a family home, teaching English for free to the children of San Josecito. I’ve always admired her spontaneity and her willingness to give so freely.
Have you ever been so moved by someone you’ve met in your travels that you were compelled to give without hesitation? These are some of my favorite stories, so I hope you’ll write to me at

I’ll be focusing on South America next in Harriet’s Corner, but, as always, I welcome all of your stories.
