Anticipating Egypt
In my travels, I’ve been moved to tears twice. Once was at the Taj Mahal—but that’s a story for another time. The other was when I first saw the Great Pyramids.
I arrived in Cairo at night, so I couldn’t see much of anything. The next morning, I woke just before sunrise—and through my open window, I finally saw them. I’d been reading about them since the fifth grade, and now, here I was. As I sat there watching the sun come up, I entered an almost meditative state. The desert feels a certain way right before sunrise—calm, and filled with anticipation. I had so much to anticipate, too, as I took my first real look at Egypt, at the Pyramids, and at what humanity accomplished all those thousands of years ago.
I’ll never forget that feeling—and I remember it especially fondly now, because I’ll be returning to Egypt in April. I'd like to publish your favorite impressions about travel here on Harriet's Corner. Specifically, I'll be focusing on Southeast Asia in my next update—but I welcome stories and photos from everywhere you've traveled. Please send them to me at:
